Random disconnected NR2003 thoughts

So I've rummaged through various set ideas, and ultimately decided to overhaul an old project from last year.

In mid 2023, I wanted to do a retro carset backdating the then-current years driver roster to 2001/2002. I got most of the way done with the Primary schemes and did a handful of alternates, but ended up never finishing it, and with the new season in full swing, have decided to start fresh for 2024 with a complete overhaul, including new paint schemes from the ground up.

So with that being said, I've so far finalized the primary paint scheme/driver list for each of the 36 Charter organizations. Most were fairly easy translations, some required a bit of research, and Kaulig's #16 and Rick Ware's #15 were a right PITA since all of their sponsors in Cup so far didn't exist back then (with the exception of Riley Herbst, but I felt like Grala, who is making the bulk of the starts fits better in the ride) Heck I'm can't even find when Jacob Companies was founded, so that might have to be nixed anyways.

So here is the current preliminary roster. One of the big changes from last years roster to this years is the addition of Oldsmobile, Plymouth, and Mercury to the grid with some of the sports smaller teams.

I would love to see what those plymouths and oldsmobiles look like. Will you be using the Alero or something like the intrigue for the Olds?

I will be using an Intrigue template I cooked up a while ago. Here is a example of a car done up for the set using it

Nice! That looks slick. I've always used the Alero myself but I dig the intrigue's looks as well.
May I ask if it could be possible to get that template perchance?

I've been playing around with an idea in my head to try and make a full 43 car carset using the in game NR2003 paint booth, with GIMP only used to create the logos/numbers/decals. Sort of a "tribute to old times" sort of thing. Not sure if I'll actually go through with it, but it is an idea.

I wish I still had access to some of my early work, as I had several carsets I'd love to revisit.

First from my ingame paint booth days, I made a set of 2015 F1 cars to stock cars (jeez, I've been playing this game THAT long?) I also did a 2015/2016 Mock Season carset predicting the 2016 Cup series season. I don't remember much, but I know I had Danica in an HScott 52, and Dakota Armstrong in the 9. Don't exactly recall what else I did, or who I put in the 10 to replace Danica.

Finally one of my early GIMP carsets was a fictional 2008 mock-season carset, wherein I remember I had Jerry Nadeau return to cup with Nelson Bowers, who bought back equipment and the shop from Ginn Racing after they folded.

I'd love to do more in the vein on the latter 2 carsets, but my creativity in that department has sort of waned over the years. I might try something tho.

I've been there with a lot of my stuff. Since I've moved to Photoshop it's honestly been easier to just start over and re-paint everything to the quality I want today.

I did this a while back with a car from the 2018 ISCRA Cup carset and it really has me considering making a complete "remastered" set.

Jacobs was founded in 1999

I kinda wish NR2003 had an option to listen to menu music
and maybe even music during sessions

but thats more for arcade-type racers i guess

I wish we had a more accessible version of sandbox, imagine the tracks that would be cranked out on a daily basis if that would be the case. The current one we have crashes half the time and is generally annoying to use, probably why we don't get as much tracks for this game nowadays.

I did hear about someone making a Sandbox 2, though I'm not sure how creditable it is

So for the longest while, I've wanted to make a pseudo-retro install for NR2003, with a focus on trying to mimic the early 3d art style of 90's PC games and consoles such as the N64, PS1, and Sega Saturn. I've attempted to make a mod for said project, but right now that's on hold due to technical difficulties, so I have decided to try and rework an existing mods textures to my purposes.

So to do a proof of concept I created a 256x256 Cup2000 template and some basic test cars. Not sure how viable this will ultimately be, but it's a project I hope to get going sooner or later.

I wanna start working on shadows for my track but I can't because it feels very intimidating. I don't even know how to make shadow textures or make lightmaps :p

I'm late to mentioning this but a new tool might be coming to NR2003 in the future:

This will make offline racing so much more dynamic with the AI being able to move around the racing groove more but also as the race progresses they can get more aggressive like real life.
oh I will SO be using this

I'm in a bit of a dilemma, as I've been wanting to take another direction with my "2024 to 2001/2002" carset, but also am burnt out on the idea. At this point with the amount of work and teasing I feel like an ass not releasing it, but my creative vision and ideas have moved on, and it doesn't fit into my current creative philosophy.

And with the major shakeups and uncertainty happening in 2025, there is a part of me that wants to wait until next year, and a further part of me who wants to shift gears entirely, which is the direction I might just end up going. I still want to do something with the concept, but the current form just doesn't appeal to me no-more.

On an ever deeper note I'm sort of burnt out on NR2003 itself, at least until I can figure out mod creation. I've basically painted for every mod I have interest in, and as I've fallen out of love with sim racing, at least in hardcore titles, and the lack of other non-iracing options to spread my wings into regarding stock car racing that allow for modding, I'm sort of just stuck.

I always take a long hiatus from NR2003 (currently been on one for a few months now), also why I designed my series to not rely on time really so whenever I come back it just continues right where it left off. I always come back though, I just don't force myself to keep racing or making NR2003 content if I am not in the mood.

Yeah, that's part of why I shifted my offline stuff to being historical. I'm just too busy to keep up with modern stuff on a day-to-day basis anymore. Being able to work on what I want, when I want is so refreshing.

I've been working on the 1984 season of ISCRA for a while now, and we're so close to being finished, but it's not like we have to be ready by a certain time. It's done when it's done. lol

I understand that !

I've been struggling with motivation quite bad as of late on NR as a whole, but more so on painting and world building(both of which is still needing a lot done for the hellset) and honestly everytime i've come back from a big hiatus i've felt like a new man working on the stuff, so i'd recommend just taking a bit of a pause, and to maybe focus on some older stuff or just some more interesting ideas you have instead of forcing your creativity into one space IMO(which is not a good opinion lol)

Apparently somebody got NR2003 working on a Jailbroken 3DS.

This + custom made mods and tracks is basically what I've always dreamed of. Thought I'd have to pony up for a steam-deck, but this perfectly fits the "casual NR2003/NRCade project idea I have in mind
